GEOCACHING

The Almost Free, Real-World Treasure Hunt. Get Outside, and Hunt.

Watch Wildlife Videos

If you’ve ever enjoyed hiking, exploring new places, or finding hidden gems off the beaten path, geocaching might become your next favorite hobby. When people ask what I like to do for fun…I describe geocaching as a real-world treasure hunt. Geocaching combines outdoor adventure with GPS technology via an app. Millions of geocaches are hidden across the globe just out of plain sight, waiting to be discovered by people just like you.

Whether you’re looking for a family-friendly activity, a reason to explore new trails, or a fun way to spend a weekend outdoors, geocaching offers an adventure almost anywhere.

Geocaching

Geocaching is an outdoor activity where people use an app to locate hidden containers called “geocaches” all around the world.

Each geocache has published coordinates that guide you to its general location. Once you arrive, your phone will vibrate and the challenge is finding the hidden container. Most caches contain a logbook  (link to my favorite waterproof logbook) where visitors sign their name and record the date of their visit.

Some larger caches can sometimes contain small trinkets, toys, collectible items, or “trackables” that travel from cache to cache around the world.

Where Are Geocaches Hidden?

One of the coolest parts about geocaching is that caches can be found almost anywhere people are. You have walked by hundreds in your lifetime, completely unaware they’re hiding.

Cache owners intentionally place geocaches in locations that showcase interesting views, hidden local attractions, or places people might otherwise overlook.

How Big Are Geocaches?

Geocaches come in a variety of sizes which you’re able to filter on your app.

Micro

Typically smaller than a film canister. Usually contains only a logbook.

Small

About the size of a sandwich container. May contain small trade items.

Regular

The most common size. Large enough for logbooks and various trinkets or toys.

Large

Ammo cans, buckets, or large containers capable of holding larger items and trackables. The cache description usually provides clues about the container size before you begin your search.

Hide Your Own Cache!

Hiding your own cache may be even more fun than finding a cache! Create and hide your own cache from the Geocache App, and be alerted whenever someone finds your cache!

Don’t forget a leave behind, my family uses these cute little cows, because my son loves cows.

What Should You Expect on Your First Geocache Hunt?

Your first geocache may take longer than expected. Even when standing within a few feet of the coordinates, the container can be surprisingly difficult to spot. Part of the fun is learning how cache owners think when creating clever hiding spots. My children LOVE to geocache, and it gets them outside for the day.

What Equipment Do You Need?

The good news is that getting started requires very little equipment.

Where Can You Find Geocaches?

Almost everywhere. Every country, city, likely even a few near your own home. They’re all over. The easiest place to start is Geocaching.com, the world’s largest geocaching platform.

The app allows you to:

  • View nearby caches
  • Navigate using GPS
  • Log finds
  • Read hints
  • Track your statistics

Where Can You Buy Geocaching Supplies?

As you become more involved, you may want to purchase additional gear.

Why Geocaching Is Growing in Popularity

Geocaching combines technology, exploration, problem-solving, and outdoor adventure. In 2020, I started with my family and learned quickly that it’s affordable, family-friendly, and can be enjoyed  anywhere, we now enjoy geocaching on vacation and collecting badges.

Whether you’re hiking mountain trails, exploring a local park, or discovering hidden landmarks in your hometown, geocaching turns ordinary outings into adventures. The next hidden treasure may be closer than you think.
